TOPEKA (KSNT) – Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old woman in connection with a deadly crash that killed a Topeka man last year.
Shawnee County Department of Corrections booking reports show the Topeka Police Department arrested Hailey Christine Pelton on Thursday, June 5.
According to court documents, police issued a warrant for Pelton nearly a year after the Aug. 2 2024, crash that killed Troy L. Fields, 36, of Topeka. Fields died after he was ejected from the vehicle when it crashed into a home at Southwest Huntoon and Southwest Plass Avenue.
According to court documents from a separate wrongful death settlement, Pelton was driving when the crash happened. The plaintiff in the case alleged Pelton caused the crash through negligence and carelessness.
The plaintiffs and State Farm, on behalf of Pelton, reached an undisclosed settlement in the case. According to court records, the insurance policy had a $100,000 per person bodily injury limit.

Pelton is charged with:
- Involuntary manslaughter, DUI
- Driving under the influence, first offense
- Racing on the highway
- Failure to maintain a single lane
Pelton remains in jail on a $250,000 bond. Her next court appearance is set for June 12.
