TOPEKA (KSNT) – Protesters chanted at the steps of the capitol, as thousands of people gathered for the “No Kings” protest.
The event was organized in response to recent legislation. Protesters held signs, gave speeches, and called for transparency in government. Many expressed concerns over I.C.E. deportations and decisions made without public input.
Protesters traveled from all over Kansas to make their message clear; they are not backing down.
“The number of people out here matters considerably,” protester Sarah Podrasky said. “Just to show that, to let people know they’re not alone, that we have their backs, that we’re here for them and we’re not going to go anywhere.”
Organizers led the rally with speeches and chants, expressing their frustration with President Donald Trump.
“People are fed up with this country,” protest organizer Christie Peterson said. “And the way the government is treating it like it’s theirs instead of ours. And the representatives aren’t representing us.”
Some protesters shared personal stories about how recent laws have affected their lives.
“Getting phone calls from my friends saying that their loved ones are gone. And that’s really heartbreaking and sad,” Protester, Abigail Scheideman said. “And I also really want my parents to be able to live out a nice long life with Medicare and Medicaid.”

While emotions were high, the protest stayed peaceful throughout the day.
Organizers worked closely with capitol police to keep the event under control.
“Being here really encourages, you know, both sides to talk to each other and work together and meet in the middle,” Protester, Aziza Smith said.
Organizers say they plan to hold more events each month to keep the conversation going.
