TOPEKA (KSNT) — Some Kansas lawmakers are shaken up after a pair of shootings over the weekend ended with a Minnesota lawmaker dead and another injured.
The shooter allegedly targeted two state lawmakers and their spouses in the early morning hours on Saturday, June 14. Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed while State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were injured and went into surgery. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the attacks were politically motivated.
27 News spoke with Kansas Republican State Representative Laura Williams. She said violence towards lawmakers is never the best option.
“I think what had happened in Minnesota over the weekend is every elected official’s worst nightmare coming to life,” Williams said. “I think people need to rise up and recognize that we as a community need to find out how are we a part of the solution versus resorting to violence.”
