TOPEKA (KSNT) – With bombers deploying from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, the strikes on Iran hit close to home for the Midwest.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran says the action was preemptive, triggered by intelligence that Iran may be close to building a nuclear bomb.
“The intelligence indicated, at least to me, that Iran had enough nuclear material to build a bomb,” Moran said. “Their refusal to allow continued investigation inspection by the international community to see what they were doing really did suggest that this may have been the right time.”
But Moran is also looking ahead, saying the U.S. must prepare for potential retaliation, including here at home.
“I’ve asked for an FBI briefing, and as soon as I know of any information that would suggest that we need to take specific steps in Kansas to protect people,” Moran said. “I certainly want to share that information and make sure that those steps are taken.”
A political science professor told 27 News that this strike, while not unprecedented, could destabilize the region.

While there’s no known threat to Kansas bases right now, instillations like Fort Riley could play a role if the conflict escalates.
“We’ll learn over time about the capabilities of Iran to return to developing those nuclear capabilities,” Moran said. “And we have to be wary today and tomorrow and into the future.”
Moran is going to a top-secret briefing in Washington on Monday to learn more about the threat level and what’s next. He said right now Kansans aren’t in immediate danger, but it is a time to stay alert.
