TOPEKA (KSNT) — Top court officials in Kansas are opening up to public comment this summer on some proposed changes to child support guidelines following the passage of a new law.
The state’s child support guidelines are rules used by judges and hearing officers to figure out how much child support each parent is required to pay toward raising children, according to the Kansas Judicial Branch. The guidelines help create a fair and balanced distribution of time and money when it comes to raising children.
The Kansas Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee put forward a proposal of the changes to the established guidelines, following the recent passage of House Bill 2062 earlier this year. The new law created by HB 2062 takes effect on July 1 this year alongside dozens of other new laws.
HB 2062 modifies how individual retirement accounts are treated in state statutes, which govern child support, according to the Kansas Judicial Branch. The bill also allows for child support in cases involving unborn children from the date of conception and including the direct medical and pregnancy-related expenses of the mother.
