TOPEKA (KSNT) – Two organizations are helping distribute fans for free to Topeka locals this week to help them stay cool during the worst of the summer heat.
The Salvation Army and Evergy are teaming up for an annual fan distribution event at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25 at the Salvation Army’s community center located at 1320 South Sixth Street. Fans will be distributed to people on a first come, first serve basis.
Major Tom McDowell with the Salvation Army said a total of 345 fans were collected during the recent fan drive for this distribution. He encourages people to show up early on the day of the giveaway.

“Anyone needs to do is go outdoors for 30 minutes and they’ll understand the need to find relief in this heat,” McDowell said. “I know that even while we’re doing the distribution itself, our volunteers get very, very hot. They’re doing it because they know they’ll be giving relief to a lot of families.”
McDowell said the fans will be given away with the goal of one per household in a drive-thru format. People can collect fans until the supply is gone. Attendees are also encouraged not to block the driveways and entrances/exits to businesses nearby during the giveaway.
