TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Sunflower State Games and Fiesta Topeka are filling the capital city with energy and visitors.
Visit Topeka says events like these are making a noticeable difference in the local economy.
“On the fiesta side, you know, that has traditionally been about 50,000 to 60,000 people in attendance over the multi-week activation they do. So, for us, that’s about two and a half to three and a half million dollars in direct visitor spend,” Visit Topeka President Sean Dixon said. “We’ve got more than 5,000 registered participants in the state games. So, between 250 and 500,000 right there over that two-week or two-day period.”
That spending benefits more than just event organizers it filters into the city.

While Fiesta Topeka’s main focus is the cultural celebration, the crowds it draws still makes an impact.
“You could have a really nice time for probably less than 50 bucks for a family,” Fiesta Topeka Co-Publicity Chair Renee Franklin said. “So, our hope is that you come, you enjoy, you get a little taste of what our culture is all about, and at the same time enjoy hanging out with your friends and our wonderful food, of course.”
The Sunflower State Games are also attracting athletes and families from across the state, with more than 20 sports offered this year.
“It’s a great opportunity for Topeka. You’ve got thousands of participants coming in, obviously, and they’ve got parents and friends and grandparents,” SSG Interim Director Mike Randol said. “So, you know, it’s an opportunity for a fairly significant economic impact as well.”
