KANSAS (KSNT) – The National Weather Service (NWS) of Topeka is warning of flash flooding in parts of eastern Kansas on Thursday morning.
At 5 a.m., the NWS issued a flash flooding warning that will be in effect until 8 a.m. for Douglas, northeastern Osage, southeastern Shawnee and southern Jefferson Counties. Other flash flooding warnings for Jackson, Clay, Platte, Wyandotte, Johnson and Leavenworth counties are also in place until 8:45 a.m.
Jefferson County Emergency Management reports there is flooding on Highway 24 going north into Lawrence and also at Highway 24 and Highway 59.
According to the NWS, Doppler radar and rain gauges indicate there was heavy rain across the area with between 1.4 and 4 inches. The NWS says another 0.5 to 1 inches are possible in the area.
The NWS said flash flooding is ongoing or is expected to begin shortly.
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the NWS wrote. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
As a result of the storms, Evergy reports that over 22,000 customers in Kansas and Missouri are without power.
