KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Lawrence police are investigating a shooting that left two men dead and a woman critically injured late Thursday night.
Highway 56 back open after two-vehicle crash in Douglas Co.
Police were called to Edgewood Homes at 1600 Haskell Ave. just after 8 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about gunfire in the area. Police said at least one caller reported seeing a man with a gun running through the parking lot and firing shots.
When police officers arrived, they found three people who had been shot. They found a man dead inside a truck and another man dead on the ground. Lawrence police said in a statement that they believe the man on the ground died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A woman who had been shot was taken to a trauma center by helicopter.
Police believe the shooting occurred after a recent break-up between a couple. Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the woman arrived home to find her ex-boyfriend inside, an altercation ensued and the woman ran to a truck where a man was waiting. Police believe the ex-boyfriend approached the truck, shot the man, shot the woman as she ran away and then took his own life.
Police have since identified the male victim in the truck as 21-year-old Javien K. Hardin, and the woman who was injured remained in critical condition as of Friday morning.
